General Classification

The maillot jaune for the general classification is the main target for many of the leading riders. Three times champion, and winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2011 is Alberto Contador (SaxoBank-SunGard), who will start the race as the overwhelming favourite despite being suspended and awaiting a hearing over failing a drugs test last year.

His main rival will be Andy Schleck (Leopard Trek), who was runner up for the last two years. Most of the top riders in the world will also be looking to challenge for a podium finish including:

• Team Radioshack – Chris Horner (10th in 2010), Levi Leipheimer (13th in 2010), Andreas Kloden and Jani Brajkovic
• BMC Racing – Cadel Evans (2nd in 2007 and 2008)
• Liquigas-Cannondale – Ivan Basso (2nd in 2005)
• Garmin-Cervelo – Ryder Hesjedal (7th in 2010) and Christian Vende Velde (4th in 2008)
• Team Sky – Bradley Wiggins (4th in 2009)
• Omega Pharma-Lotto – Jurgen Van Den Broeck (5th in 2010)
• Rabobank – Robert Gesink (6th in 2010)
• Euskaltel-Euskadi – Samuel Sanchez (4th in 2010)
